Such a Long Journey by Rohinton Mistry. January 5, Septem. BookerTalk Indian authors, Rohinton Mistry. Such a Long Journey was my first experience of Rohinton Mistry’s work. I usually enjoy novels set in India and this was no exception. It concerns Gustad Noble. The surname is significant for this is a fairly ordinary guy who tries to do the decent thing by his family and an old friend and ends up embroiled in a political scandal. Such a Long Journey is the first novel from Canada-based Indian writer Rohinton Mistry. It was short-listed for the Booker Prize (in ) as were his next two novels. Complex, but not long, it is the story of a middle-aged Parsi man in 70’s Bombay, Gustad Noble, as he navigates his way through a maelstrom of family, friendship, urban and national tragedies on a journey towards inner peace and reconciliation. Such a Long Journey is one of the remarkable and best works by Rohinton Mistry which portrays the realistic conditions and political history of the Indian society especially the life of the Parsi community before and after independence. Mistry has well studied the history, social and political condition of India during his stay in Bombay and has adapted it in the novel, which is interesting and traditionally significant.
